Tom Cole
A GOP leader claims massive Republican spending did not contribute to the GOP losing control of the House and Senate in 2006. He insists voters don’t care that the GOP squandered billions of dollars on mindless pork-barrel projects like Alaska’s Bridge to Nowhere. And he proclaims there’s no need to return to conservative principles in order for Republicans to win Congress and the White House in 2008.
That’s right: Congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma, who chairs the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), has shown his true colors in an interview in the May 9 Washington Post.
Asked why the GOP lost control of both the House and Senate in 2006, Rep. Cole responded, "Oh, I don’t think the problem was spending. People who argue that we lost because we weren’t true to our base, that’s just wrong."
Rep. Cole reportedly is not pushing former conservative Congressmen such as Jim Ryun (Kan.) or Richard W. Pombo (Calif.) to try to reclaim their House seats because he thinks "moderate
candidates might fare better."
The new NRCC leader "doesn’t think the GOP was doomed" by appropriating federal money for bridges to nowhere in Alaska. Cole also pledges to move the GOP further to the left in order to attract swing voters because, he says, "The United States is a center-right country, not a right-wing country."
In response to Cole’s outrageous remarks, ConservativesBetrayed.com has launched our "Can Cole" campaign. We believe Tom Cole should be forced to RESIGN his position at the NRCC
for his outright betrayal of conservatives and conservative principles.
Tom Cole’s remarks prove that even after the "thumping" that Republicans took in the 2006 elections, the GOP establishment hasn’t learned a thing. They’re going to keep borrowing and spending the nation into bankruptcy. They’re going to keep thumbing their nose at the conservative base. And they’re going to keep losing election after election until the
present big-government leadership is gone.
But if we quickly generate a groundswell of conservative support for our "Can Cole" campaign, we will send a message to GOP leaders that it’s time to change course - or continue to lose.
Click here to sign the "Can Cole" petition.
Here are more things you can do right now to participate in our "Can Cole" campaign:
Then follow up by signing the petition by personally contacting the offices of Republican leaders. (Their contact information is listed at the bottom of this e-mail.)
Withhold financial support from all GOP Congressional Committees. When you get your next fund-raising letter in the mail, respond by telling GOP leaders they won’t get another dime from you until Republicans stop behaving like Democrats and saddling our children and grandchildren with a mountain of debt and ever-expanding government.
Inform them you intend to give your money only to PRINCIPLED conservative organizations and candidates. And tell them that you will support conservative challengers to establishment Republican candidates.
Sincerely,
Richard A. Viguerie
