Evangelicals and Romney

June 22, 2007

Today Fox News is reporting that R. Phillips Roberts, President of the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is saying that Evangelicals are unlikely to vote for Mitt Romney who has been open about his Mormon faith.  Read the article here.

I have a couple of problems with this article.  The article calls Roberts a Mormon expert.  Really?  A Mormon EXPERT.  The following statement is a purely personal observation from me, but how about being an expert of your own faith instead of focusing on what you think is wrong with another faith.

"I have a very difficult time with the perspective [the Mormon church holds] that, ‘we are the true expression of Christianity and all other forms of it are wrong and false and apostasy and heresy,’" says R. Philip Roberts, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

So he is rebuking someone for holding a view that he also holds.  He believes his way is the right way.  The Mormons disagree with him.  For that matter, some Baptists disagree with him.

I am a Christian and Roberts certainly doesn’t speak for me.  I am voting for a President, not a national pastor.  I want a political conservative.  If he happens to be of my own faith great!  If not I just hope he holds a solid faith.  One that believes we should NOT run around and blow ourselves and others up for our faith, one that believes that one must be true to their word and has a faith that provides the core of their moral compass.

I’m a little weary of the religious leaders affliated with the right trying to speak for me.  I respect these men for their knowledge in their faith, but to believe they speak for the majority of faithful Christians is a bit arrogant don’t you think?  They don’t know how I’ll vote.  I haven’t even made up my own mind on how I’ll vote this early in the election cycle.  They certainly don’t know how I think.  And sadly in most cases, I don’t think they care. It is statements like these that have turned so many people off.  Arrogance is not well received in politics or in faith.

The perceived arrogance of the religious right has turned many toward the religious left.  But I pray that soon these folks will realize that the answer to the arrogance of some on the religious right is certainly not the arrogance of the religious left.  This is an issue that I am dealing with on a daily basis in my circles. It’s becoming more and more of a HEATED issue.  One that I think must be dealt with….and soon.

Oh and by the way, if you are interested.  Visit Evangelicals for Mitt by clicking here.

Seems some evangelicals don’t agree with Roberts.

I have an idea and one that might just work……How about we leave arrogance to the left and call it a day?
